No. We install pool barriers to the applicable Australian requirements and leave you with practical care guidance. We are not a building certifier and this is not legal advice. Formal certification, if required, is arranged through the appropriate independent party.

What Queensland pool fence rules should homeowners know?

Accepted Answer

Queensland treats a pool barrier as a continuous system: the fence, the gate, the latch, the ground levels and anything nearby that a child could climb. Toowoomba Regional Council says pools and spas deeper than 300 mm generally need a compliant safety barrier, with an effective height of at least 1.2 m, gaps under 100 mm, self-closing and self-latching gates that open away from the pool, and a continuous non-climbable zone. National construction details often sit in AS 1926, applied in Queensland through the pool safety framework. This is plain-language guidance only, not legal advice.

Do I need a pool safety certificate after a new fence?

You may need a Form 23 pool safety certificate if you are selling or leasing a property with a pool. Installing a new fence or upgrading a gate does not automatically issue that certificate. Only a QBCC-licensed pool safety inspector can issue it. We prepare the install so it is ready for that inspection. We do not issue certificates ourselves.

What is a Form 26 nonconformity notice?

If an inspector finds the barrier does not comply, they may issue a Form 26 listing the failed items. Common items are gates that do not self-close from every position, climbable objects, and gaps. Bring the notice to the measure so the visit is a punch-list, not a guess. Rectification windows and reinspection rules are set by Queensland law, not by us.

Does a spa need fencing in Queensland?

Toowoomba Regional Council states that swimming pools and spas deeper than 300 mm must have a compliant safety barrier. Some portable pools and indoor spas also need a complying barrier even with a lockable cover. Check the current council and Queensland Government pages for your setup. We can measure a spa barrier. We cannot certify it.

Can a boundary fence form part of the pool barrier?

Yes, dividing fences often form part of a Queensland pool barrier, but they still have to meet the pool safety standard, including height and non-climbable details. Queensland Government notes both neighbours share maintenance duties when a dividing fence is also a pool barrier. A climbable rail on the neighbour side is a common inspection fail. We will say when the boundary cannot carry the job.

Why do pool gates fail inspection so often?

QBCC says pool gates must not open towards the pool, must self-close, and must self-latch from any open position. Latches on the outside need to sit at the required height. Hinges that jut out can become footholds. Propping a pool gate open is an offence. A latch that worked last summer can miss after clay movement or a windy week. Gate repair is usually faster than a full fence replacement.

Can you upgrade an existing pool fence instead of replacing it?

Often yes. Common upgrades include new self-closing gates, latch repairs, raising panels, closing gaps, and moving climbable objects away from the barrier. If the posts and line are sound, a targeted upgrade can be the cleaner path. If the line is tired or in the wrong place, a new install may be the better long-term result.

Published 2026 Queensland installer ranges are directional only, not a Toowoomba quote. Aluminium often sits around A$200 to A$350 per metre installed, semi-frameless glass around A$350 to A$600, and frameless glass around A$600 to A$1,000, with gates priced separately. Slope, demolition, core drilling and metreage move every figure. The free measure exists so the number you get is for your edge.

Will installation damage existing paving or gardens?

Existing paving, gardens, retaining walls and uneven edges are part of the measure. The crew works to a marked line, keeps the site tidy and walks you through the gate at handover. Unusual access or brittle old paving is flagged before tools arrive.
