Adult checking pool fence gate hardware before inspection, style example

Guide

A pool fence checklist before the inspector arrives.

Walk the barrier the way an inspection actually fails: gates first, then climbables, then gaps and height. Not legal advice. Not a certificate.

Direct answer: most Toowoomba fail lists start at the gate, then climbable objects, then height lost to landscaping, then gaps. Walk this list with the official pages open: Queensland Government pool fences and barriers, QBCC gates, latches and hinges, Toowoomba Regional Council pool safety and compliance. If an item is wrong, book compliance repairs or gate repairs before the certificate date, not after.

Walk-around list

  1. Gate self-closes from wide open, half open and barely open, and latches without a shove.
  2. Gate swings away from the pool, not toward the water.
  3. Latch height and shielding match current QBCC gate rules, not last decade's habit.
  4. No pot, bench, BBQ, hose reel or AC unit in the non-climbable zone.
  5. Effective height still at least 1.2 m from outside ground, including after garden beds rose.
  6. Gaps under the barrier and between members look under 100 mm all the way around.
  7. Boundary fence used as a barrier is still non-climbable on the approach side.
  8. Windows into the pool area cannot open more than 100 mm, or they are screened as required.
  9. No propped-open gate. That is not a lifestyle choice.
  10. CPR signage is present and readable if your inspector expects it.
  11. Pool is on the QBCC register if council requires it for your property.
  12. You know whether you need a Form 23 for a sale or lease, and that we do not issue it.

What to send us

The Form 26 or inspection notes if you have them. A photo of the gate latch. Suburb and whether this is a sale, a lease, a new pool or a latch that started missing. That is enough to pre-qualify. We still measure. Clay lies in photographs.

What this checklist is not

It is not AS 1926. It is not QDC MP 3.4. It is not a Form 23. Those documents and your licensed inspector are the authority. We use this list so a Toowoomba homeowner can see why we keep talking about hinges instead of selling more glass. Continue with QLD requirements if you want the longer map.
